Default Win7 Fuckup

Okay so I've tried to upgrade to win7 twice now, first it went to a dark blue screen as if i have no background, but i can see and move the mouse, so i manually restarted, when it came up said the upgrade didn't take so it went back to vista, then i tried it again, same thing happened but this time i decided to let it sit to see if it a picture would just come up but nothing so I was wondering if anyone knows what could be going on or if there is anything i need to do to get my screen back because apparently the win7 finished because when i rebooted it didn't give me an option to go back to vista. So, confused!!!

When installing operating systems I recommend NOT doing the upgrade, and instead reformating and installing a fresh copy.

So i tried to reboot manually again and started in safe mode, then it stated that set up in progress but it wouldn't do it in safe mode so it restarted again and went back to the dark blue screen and i can still see my mouse and move it around so i guess that rules out the monitor!

Upgrading a Microsoft operating system is not highly recommended. What kind of PC do you have now? Does it have a recovery partition?

Well, the only suggestion I can give you is to figure out a way to remove your HD from the desktop, plug it in as removable media to your laptop and backup what you need. Then put the HD back into your desktop, boot up and while booting press and hold F11. This will take you to the recovery manager. From there you should be able to reformat and reinstall Vista. Then, you can "try" to upgrade into 7, but I'm weary that it would work...

I never, ever upgrade to a different OS without doing a full version installation. If not done properly, they can be touchy and a huge pain in the ass. Sometimes you can even lose data, if you didn't back it up.

There is some important things to consider when doing the vista to Win 7 Upgrade.

First, It is advertised that you can simply upgrade vista to win 7 without losing your information. This is because Win 7 is heavily based off of the Windows Vista platform. However you will run into issues if you are upgrading from vista 32 bit into a Win 7 64 bit. This will require a complete reinstall. Either way a complete reinstall would probably be ideal considering the fact that OS installs are notoriously buggy simply because of all the shit being put on.

If you have anything on the harddrive that would be terrrrible to lose. I would recommend booting to a Ubuntu live cd, copying the shit that you want to save. Then doing a complete wipe. Now that may sound technically difficult, but it is generally far easier then removing your HD and trying to set it up as an external.

This does rely on the fact that you have a computer that can connect to internet, download the Ubuntu ISO, then burn to cd, and finally a flash drive or external media that can hold the backed up material.

Overall, Win 7 is sexy time so if you can get it installed kudos!

If you have a recovery partition there is no need to find the Vista CD and chances are if you have the recovery partition then there should be no installation disk. This is why they create a recovery partition. Manufacturers no longer need to provide every customer with a disk and for the most part many consumers lose the installation media or misplace it.
